Melodrama was a period of theatre in Victorian Britain that involved exaggerated characters, stock plots, and a happy ending, similar to the style of heroic tragedies of the Restoration period. 

Both Brecht and Stanislavski agreed on the ineffectiveness melodrama and fall of theatre to this point of entertainment, that prompted them to turn in different directions, as it was popular around the time they were born.
